Dean and Lindo tally dueling double-doubles
WASHINGTON - Back in the friendly confines of the Charles E. Smith Center on the GW campus in the heart of the nation's capital on Saturday, the George Washington men's basketball team got the home portion of the A-10 slate started with a thorough team win against Massachusetts, 81-73.
After starting league play by splitting games at Loyola Chicago and Richmond, the Buff & Blue were eager to compete in front of its own fans, where the squad entered play with a 6-2 in home games this season, outscoring the opposition by an average of 11.1 ppg. That mark now stands at 7-2.
While GW's lead swelled to 19 at its largest, UMass didn't go quietly, pulling to within five late in the second half before GW pulled away.
Reigning A-10 Player of the Week James Bishop IV was once again mammoth for the club, stating an early case for Conference Player of the Year. The silky lefty from Baltimore had 15 points by halftime and finished with a game-high 26 on 8-of-13 shooting, along with a team-high-tying five helpers. In a highly-anticipated matchup with UMass' Noah Fernandes, it was Bishop who doubled-up his counterpart as the Minuteman guard tied for his team's high-scoring honors with 13.
Once again George Washington found its way to victory through proficiency at the free throw line. After entering play ranked second in the A-10 and 64th in the NCAA in free throw percentage at 74.3%, GW canned 20-of-25 at the charity stripe Saturday, with Bishop accounting for 6-of-7.
While the Baltimore connection of Bishop and Brendan Adams (15 points, five assists) won the backcourt battle, the game was also won inside. Hunter Dean was also once again the big man in the middle who controlled play versus the Minutemen, this time doing so with a game- and season-high 13 rebounds in his double-double effort with 10 points along with three steals. Not to be outdone, Ricky Lindo Jr., threw up a double-dip of his own with 16 points and 11 boards to go with three swipes.
GW now takes the week off from competition before returning to play once again at home next Saturday at 4 p.m. against Saint Louis on NBC Sports Washington.
