Revolutionary rivals square off at 4 p.m. on CBS Sports Network
WASHINGTON - For the second straight season, George Washington men's basketball will take on Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this time traveling to Fairfax to take on the Patriots. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
EDWARDS A CANDIDATE FOR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
First-year Maximus Edwards set a career-high with 24 points on Saturday, another indication of the rookie's status as one of the league's top newcomers. Edwards now leads all A-10 rookies in scoring with 10.2 ppg and is second among league freshmen (first among guards) with 5.7 rebounds per game. His 29.8 minutes per game also ranks third among league rookies this season.
The 24 points were a welcome breakout for Edwards, who had scored 20 points total in his first three A-10 games. Edwards set new career-bests with nine made field goals and three made 3s on Saturday, equaling or surpassing his total from the first three league games (combined nine FG and two 3-pointers).
ADAMS AMONG A-10'S MOST IMPROVED
Graduate student Brendan Adams scored 19 points on Saturday vs. SLU, improving his scoring average to 16.4 ppg, exactly double his previous career high (8.2 ppg last year). The only player in the A-10 to see a larger jump in scoring output from last year than Adams' +8.2 is Fordham's Khalid Moore, who is averaging 13.8 ppg after posting 5.2 ppg at Georgia Tech last year.
Through 17 games, Adams has already established career-highs in points (278, previous: 238), field goals made (98, previous: 84) and 3-pointers (34, previous: 30). Adams is also posting career bests in field goal percentage (47.8%, previous: 39.4%), 3-point percentage (33.3%, previous: 28.9%), rebounding (4.3, previous: 3.7), and assists (2.8, previous: 2.1).
He has reached double figures in 16 of 17 games this season after doing so in just 25 of his first 107 career games.
HISTORY VS. GEORGE MASON
GW and George Mason square off for the 32nd time on Monday and for the 20th time as members of the A-10. The Colonials own a dominant 22-9 advantage in the series, including a 12-7 mark as conference foes.
The two teams split the season series a year ago, each winning on their respective home floor. GW is 6-6 all-time in Fairfax, but has lost on each of its last two trips. GW is looking for its first road win in the series since 2020.
Head Coach Chris Caputo was an assistant at George Mason for nine seasons from 2002-11, going 189-102 in his tenure. Monday is Caputo's first game back at EagleBank Arena since leaving for Miami (FL) in 2011.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
Mason is 3-2 in league play after a two-point victory over Davidson at home on Saturday. Four of GMU's five conference games have been decided by four points or fewer, the exception being an 11-point win over Loyola.
The Patriots feature four players who average double figures, led by preseason First Team All-Conference selection Josh Oduro with 14.3 ppg and 7.7 RPG. Tennessee transfer Victor Bailey Jr. (12.7 ppg), DeVon Cooper (10.7) and Ronald Polite III (10.3) also average double digits.
Monday's game features the A-10's top two teams in effective field goal percentage with GW (54.1%) just edging out George Mason (54.0%). The Patriots have defended the 3-point arc well this season, ranking third in the league and 31st nationally by allowing opponents to hit just 29.6% of shots from deep.
