Edwards erupts for career-high 24
WASHINGTON - At the 1:51 mark of the first half on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Center, GW men's basketball held a 39-31 lead against league powerhouse Saint Louis. However, the script took a dramatic change from there. More than ten minutes of game time later, with the Buff and Blue still stuck on 39 points, the Billikens had scored 25 more and held a 56-39 lead with 11:07 to go. Despite a valiant comeback try by GW, which included 35 points in the final 11 minutes, the decision ultimately went Saint Louis' way in the 81-74 ballgame.
A short bench and tired legs doomed the rally, as after GDUB had whittled away what was once a 17-point margin to two with 2:49 to play, Saint Louis took care of business to push the lead back to double digits and salt the game away.
On a rare off-shooting night from James Bishop IV, who nevertheless still found ways to contribute with his team-high six assists, it was first-year Maximus Edwards who led the way with a career-high 24 points for his squad. Edwards shot 9-of-16, including 3-of-7 from three in his career day.
Behind Edwards, Brendan Adams tallied 19 to help pick up the slack, but even without the nation's leading assist man in Yuri Collins, SLU just had too much. Javonte Perkins scored a game-high 27 points while Javon Pickett matched Edwards' 24, giving credence to Chris Caputo's scouting report that while Collins is the proverbial straw that stirs Saint Louis' drink, Perkins is an all-league performer in his own right and their depth was going to be formidable.
The Billikens bench outscored GW's 32-10 and the visitors enjoyed success both inside and behind the three-point arc while the Buff and Blue comparatively lacked with marksmanship. SLU connected at a .527 clip from the floor and an efficient .438 from deep on 7-of-16 shooting, while the home club surprisingly found the iron unkind in its own gym on a 9-of-33 (.273) night from deep, aiding the 25-0 run that decided the game.
The bright side for GW is the next opportunity comes less than 48 hours from this one as the team will take the national stage on MLK Day. A showdown against George Mason awaits in Fairfax, Va., on Monday at 4 p.m. on CBS Sports Network in a doubleheader with the women's team, who also tackles the Patriots at EagleBank Arena at noon.
