Rising sophomore has spent summer interning at a law firm
Fresh off helping GW softball capture its second straight Atlantic 10 regular season title, Taylor Puig has spent the summer as an intern at SMK Law Group in her hometown of Fredericksburg, Va.
For the past two months, Puig, a Criminal Justice major who compiled a .321 OBP and drove in eight runs in 28 games as a rookie, has gained hands-on experience assisting behind the scenes at the law firm.
GWsports.com caught up with the rising sophomore to find out more about her summer.
What was the process for landing this internship?
I worked previously with a judge and through that I made connections with attorneys. I reached out to one that I had met, and they offered me a summer position with them.
What is a typical day like in this internship?
I spend my mornings going to court and following lawyers through their daily lives. I help with small tasks around the office and spend time with our attorneys. I work closely with Kevin Roach, a well-respected and talented criminal defense and family law attorney.
What have been the highlights so far?
I have loved being able to get more experience in the legal field. My favorite parts have been having fun with my coworkers while being able to help our clients in what is a difficult part of their lives.
How does this internship fit into your career aspirations?
I have wanted to be a lawyer since I was in seventh grade. I did a mock trial in my civics class and fell in love with law.
What have you learned this summer that will help you going forward?
The amount that I have gained from this summer is more than I could have imagined. Each day allowed me to see new cases and scenarios and apply the terms and procedures that I have learned.
