Pitcher recognized after dominant weekend at UMass
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following a pair of dominant performances in GW softball's weekend sweep at UMass to close the regular season, Sierra Lange has earned the final Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week award of the season.
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, claimed the honor for the fourth time this spring and the 10th time in her outstanding career in Buff and Blue.
Lange was simply electric vs. the Minutewomen, ceding just one hit over 15 innings while throwing a pair of shutouts.
GW's ace tossed an eight-inning one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the opener of the series, a 1-0 Buff and Blue victory. She closed out the regular season in unforgettable fashion on Sunday, tossing a no-hitter in a 7-0 triumph with six Ks. The only base runners for UMass came via a third-inning strikeout-wild pitch and a fourth-inning walk in her second career no-no and the sixth in program history.
It was the first seven-inning no-hitter for the program since Kara Clauss did it vs. Mount St. Mary's on March 13, 2012.
With that strong finish, Lange wrapped the regular season at 24-7 with a 2.28 ERA and 185 Ks in 187 1/3 innings.
GW's leadoff hitter also provided an offensive spark throughout the weekend with four hits, all doubles, plus three runs scored and an RBI. She extended her personal-best hitting streak to 12 games along the way.
Lange and the Buff and Blue now head into the A-10 Championship as the top seed seeking to earn a repeat title. They begin the double-elimination tournament Thursday vs. either No. 4 Saint Louis or No. 5 Dayton.
