Colonials tally 17 hits across two games on Saturday
RICHMOND, Va. - George Washington baseball was unable to contain VCU's offense, giving up 16 runs across two games to the Rams and falling in both ends of a doubleheader, 5-1 and 11-3, on Saturday.
Game 1: VCU 5, GW 1
The Rams used a fourth inning error to propel themselves to an early 4-0 lead. VCU's big inning began after Tyler Locklear reached on a misplayed ball in left field. Following the error, the next three batters picked up base knocks, including Connor Husjak and Will Carlone, who each drove in a run.
GW would get on the board with an RBI walk by Anthony Frechette in the fifth, but Rams' reliever Evan Chenier got the Buff & Blue to fly out with the bases loaded in back-to-back at-bats, ending the rally.
Despite taking the loss, Colonials' starter Harrison Cohen put together a strong start in game one, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven across seven innings.
Game 2: VCU 11, GW 3
In game two, GW jumped ahead to an early 1-0 lead in the first after Logan Leax ripped an RBI double to left field. It marked the 20th time this season that the Colonials have scored a run in the first inning.
VCU tied the game up in the bottom of the first, before taking a 2-1 lead in the third. However, George Washington threw its own counterpunch in the fourth to tie the game at two.
Unfortunately, VCU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth before putting the game out of reach in the sixth.
For the second time in Saturday's twin bill, the Rams' big sixth came from a costly miscue. Following a leadoff double, the Rams extended their lead to 4-2 after a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed Scottie O'Bryan to score from second. The error again proved costly when Will Carlone hit a two out, three-run homer to put VCU up 7-2. The Rams added four more insurance runs over the final three innings to wrap up the 11-3 win.
Offensively, GW compiled 11 hits in the second game of the doubleheader. Cade Fergus, Derek Ripp, and Noah Levin each had two hits apiece, while Leax, Steve DiTomaso, and Ty Acker each drove in an RBI.
