The Colonials and Rams will play three in Richmond beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at 10 a.m.
WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball returns to action this weekend when it heads down to Richmond to face VCU for an A-10 battle. The series will begin Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a single game Sunday scheduled for 6 p.m. Stay tuned to GWsports.com and @GWBaseball1 for potential changes in game times.
LAST TIME OUT:
GW brought the winning run to the plate, but was unable to cap off its late-inning rally against Rhode Island on Sunday, falling to the Rams, 5-3, at Tucker Field, and losing the series two games to one. The Colonials now sit at 8-7 in the A-10.
STANDINGS LOG JAM:
With just three weekends of A-10 baseball remaining, there is still a massive amount of movement to be made within the standings. Entering this weekend, nine teams are separated by just three wins in the middle of the standings. Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis and Rhode Island are all tied for third place with identical 9-6 records, followed by GW and George Mason at 8-7, UMass at 7-8 and finally Richmond, Dayton, and Fordham at 6-9.
The top seven teams in the standings will make the A-10 tournament at the end of the month. Following GW's series with VCU, the Colonials will face off with George Mason and UMass.
CADE CRUSHES IN CONFERENCE:
Through the first 15 games of the A-10 slate, Colonials center fielder Cade Fergus has been raking. The senior is slashing .397/.480/.730 with five homers and 13 RBIs. Currently, Fergus leads the conference with 47 total bases, while his 1.210 OPS is third in the A-10.
TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST:
This weekend, GW will look to channel its form from last season when it faces conference rival VCU. In 2021, GW was the only A-10 team to hand the Rams a loss in conference, winning three out of four games against the eventual A-10 champions. In last year's series, GW dropped the opening game at Tucker Field, 6-4, before ripping off three straight victories.
SCOUTING THE RAMS:
Looking to defend its conference title in 2022, VCU got off to a slow start in the A-10, winning just three of its first six games. Recently though, the Rams have righted the ship and have won seven of their last nine. They are currently 10-5 and sit in second place in the A-10.
D1 Baseball preseason All-American Tyler Locklear is the name to watch for the Rams offense. Locklear leads VCU in batting average (.322), hits (49), homers (10), and RBIs (39).
