Lange honored on First Team with Ponce and Williams on Second Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After earning its second straight Atlantic 10 regular season title and a return to postseason play, GW softball had three student-athletes land NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region honors on Thursday, highlighted by a First Team selection for Sierra Lange.
Alessandra Ponce and Alexa Williams earned spots on the All-Region Second Team. All three of them are now eligible for All-America consideration from the NFCA.
Lange becomes the first three-time First Team pick in program history, while Ponce is the second Colonial to earn All-Region honors four times joining former teammate Jenna Cone. Williams was named to the list for the second straight season to begin her already-decorated career.
Lange was selected to the First Team in the utility/pitcher spot for a third straight completed season in recognition of her continued all-around excellence.
Last week, GW's ace became the first repeat A-10 Pitcher of the Year in a decade honoring her tremendous work in the circle. She ranks fourth in the country in wins with 27, including 19 in 25 appearances vs. A-10 competition, and also stands among the national leaders with a 2.25 ERA and 210 strikeouts in 217 2/3 innings pitched.
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, was named to the All A-10 Championship Team last week after starting all five games for the Buff and Blue and pitching to a 2.08 ERA over 30 1/3 innings.
Heading into the National Invitational Softball Championship, she has 94 victories, 772 strikeouts, 89 complete games and 18 shutouts in her career, all program records by a wide margin.
Lange has also starred offensively at the top of the Buff and Blue lineup, posting a .338/.438/.579 slash line with 18 extra-base hits and an A-10 leading 48 runs scored. She has set a career high with 19 steals and also ranks among the nation's toughest to strikeout in the final season of her decorated career.
Williams was named A-10 Player of the Year thanks to a conference-leading 52 RBIs and .680 slugging percentage. The sophomore outfielder from El Cajon, Calif., ranks 18th nationally at 1.08 RBIs per game and is also among the national leaders in batting average (.379), hits (58), runs (41), home runs (11) and total bases (104) while striking out just four times in 153 at-bats.
An All-Region Third Team pick last spring, Williams has come up clutch in huge moments, highlighted by a pair of grand slams and a walk-off, three-run homer vs. Saint Louis to clinch the A-10 regular season title on April 30. She was named to the All A-10 Championship Team after slashing .533/.588/.933 with three extra-base hits and six RBIs over five games.
Also a four-time All-Conference honoree, Ponce has continued to produce in the middle of the order while playing tremendous defense at first base in her final collegiate season.
The graduate student from Henderson, Nev., leads the team with 59 hits while ranking in the top five in the A-10 in RBIs (35) and slugging percentage (.540). Her 16 doubles rank 19th nationally, and earlier this season, she became the program's all-time leader in two-baggers and now has 58.
Ponce tallied her 17th multi-hit performance and 10th multi-RBI effort of the spring at the A-10 Championship.
She was previously named to the First Team last spring, the Second Team in 2018 and the Third Team in 2019.
That sterling trio has helped GW (36-15) earn its third straight postseason trip, and the Colonials begin their run at the NISC in Fort Collins, Colo., on Friday vs. Kansas in a 1 p.m. (ET) first pitch.
