The Colonials plate 10 runs in the seventh during wild A-10 clash
Thursday's contest featured an early offensive assault from the Minutemen. UMass scored in five of the first six innings, including a five-run sixth that put the visitors up 15-4.
The Colonials never quit, though, and in the seventh inning, their epic rally began. GW sent 14 batters to the plate, and scored 10 runs on seven hits, to chip away at the deficit. The biggest blows of the inning were a pair of back-to-back dingers by Cade Fergus and Steve DiTomaso that made it a 15-14 game.
In the eighth, GW would complete its comeback to the tie score thanks to an RBI single from Mike Ludowig. The 11-run rally marked GW's largest since it overcame a seven-run deficit to beat Mount St. Mary's in May of 2008.
Unfortunately, the Minutemen responded with their own long ball in the top of the ninth. Dylan Judd crushed a two-run homer to left that put UMass back on top, 17-15.
In the bottom of the stanza, GW almost completed another incredible rally. The Colonials loaded the bases with one out, and while Logan Leax got GW within a run thanks to an RBI single, UMass pitcher Tyler Dalton got the Buff & Blue to pop out two twice to end the game.
Despite the loss, several Colonials had dominant offensive afternoons. Leax finished the day 5-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Fergus went 3-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs.
