Colonials launch three homers in effort

PHILADELPHIA - George Washington baseball was unable to hold on to an early lead on Saturday, falling to Saint Joseph's 9-5 at Smithson Field.

The Colonials offense got on the board early, crushing a two-run home run in the third inning off the bat of Steve DiTomaso. GW would add another run in the fourth with an RBI single by Logan Leax, before adding two more runs in the fifth and sixth via solo bombs by Cade Fergus and Ty Acker, respectively, to stake the Buff & Blue to a 5-1 lead.

However, Saint Joseph's offense wouldn't go down without a fight. After managing just one run against GW starter Connor Harris, the Hawks chipped away at the Colonials' bullpen in the later innings. In the seventh, SJU began the inning with a lead-off walk, which opened the doors for the next four batters to reach base. In total, St. Joe's plated four runs on three hits in the seventh to knot the game at 5-5.

One inning later, Saint Joseph's would take the lead for good. The Hawks sent eight batters to the plate, and brought home four runs on four hits to cap off the 9-5 victory.

Despite the loss, GW found success in the batters box. Four Colonial batters registered multiple hits, while seven different Colonials had at least one base knock. Cade Fergus led the way, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Up next, the Colonials will look to win the getaway game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
