Mullarkey nets three goals in loss
WASHINGTON – Despite scoring six goals in the second half, GW lacrosse couldn't withstand a late Gardner-Webb offensive surge that gave the Bulldogs a 12-8 win at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field on Monday.
GW headed into halftime down three goals and was well on its way to completing a comeback, outscoring the Bulldogs 6-3 to tie the game at eight goals apiece. However, four-straight goals from the visitors in the final three minutes of play would help Gardner-Webb to its third win of the season.
Phoebe Mullarkey netted a season-high three goals in the setback and added an assist to finish the day with a season-best four points. The sophomore midfielder helped Alana Greene find the back of the net for the game-tying goal. Katelyn Walker (2), Tori Hampton (1) and Emily Mowbray (1) tallied GW's other scores.
GW found itself down two goals after the opening quarter, and a strong defensive effort from both teams accounted for just one goal in the second stanza in favor of the visitors. GW went into the halftime break down, 5-2.
The Buff & Blue scored three goals in the third quarter to cut into the visitors' lead and entered the final 15 minutes of play down by one. Back-and-forth goals began the final frame, and then two-straight scores from GW tied the game at eight. Offensive momentum swung in favor of Gardner-Webb, who tallied four in a row for the 12-8 decision.
UP NEXT: The Buff & Blue will head to Georgetown on Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Hoyas.
