Cohen & Kuncl combined to shut down the Black Bears
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball got its weekend series off to a flying start on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Maine at Tucker Field behind a strong pitching effort from Harrison Cohen and Trevor Kuncl.
Cohen pitched into the eighth inning on the way to his first victory of the season before Kuncl closed the door on the Black Bears for a six-out save.
Offensively, Noah Levin drove in three runs, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Cade Fergus added an insurance run in the eighth with a no-doubt long ball of his own.
GW never trailed in improving to 2-0 in its home park early this season.
The Buff and Blue went in front with a pair of runs in the third inning thanks to a sac fly from Levin and a two-out RBI single from Michael Ludowig, and after the Black Bears dinged Cohen for a run in the fourth, Levin crushed his second homer of the year an inning later to make it 4-1.
That proved enough offense thanks to Cohen, who recorded a season-high eight Ks in his seven-plus innings. The veteran right-hander retired the first six batters that he faced before deftly navigating trouble in the later innings, which included igniting a 1-6-3 double play to end the seventh.
Kuncl entered after Maine started the eighth with back-to-back singles and proceeded to retire six of the eight batters that he faced. The Buff and Blue closer allowed an inherited runner to score before ending that threat with a strikeout with the potential tying runs in scoring position.
Eight different Colonials recorded hits as part of a 10-hit attack. Levin finished 2-for-2 with a walk, while Steve DiTomaso reached three times and scored twice. Fergus' late solo shot well over the fence in left-center was his second of the season.
GW looks to make it three straight Ws and a series victory on Saturday in a 1 p.m. start vs. the Black Bears.
