Colonials score 10 unanswered runs to sink Hoyas
Georgetown entered Tuesday afternoon's contest as one of the best home run hitting teams in the nation, and lived up to that reputation early. The Hoyas blasted a pair of homers as part of a six-run second inning that gave them a 6-0 lead over the Buff & Blue. While GW was able to sneak a run home in the fourth, the Hoyas cancelled it out with one of their own, and ultimately took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
From there, the Colonials would start their rally. Joe Biancone drove in a run via a double, before coming around to score on a Cade Fergus single to make it 7-3. GW would add one more run in the sixth, before completing its comeback in the seventh.
The Colonials sent 10 batters to the plate, and scored four runs on three hits in the seventh. Cade Fergus continued his stellar afternoon, crushing a dinger to left center to make it 7-6. Three batters later, GW would tie the game up thanks to a Derek Ripp sac-fly, before finally taking its first lead after a Mike Ludowig RBI single. GW would tack on three more runs in the eighth to cap off the 11-7 comeback.
GW's offense brought it in every facet Tuesday. The Buff & Blue scored in each of the final five innings, and finished with 17 hits on the afternoon. Six different Colonials recorded multi-hit games on Tuesday, including Fergus, Steve DiTomaso, and Anthony Frechette, who each had three knocks. DiTomaso also extended his hitting streak to a career-high nine games with a single in the first inning.
On the mound, Benny Wilson took home the win after holding the Hoyas off the board with 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Jon Brus and Trevor Kuncl also pitched scoreless innings to help GW lock up the game.
Up next, GW will travel to UMES for a Wednesday afternoon tilt. First pitch from Maryland is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
