Buff & Blue swimmer placed 37th in finale at national meet
ATLANTA - George Washington's Djurdje Matic wrapped his first trip to the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championship on Saturday morning at McAuley Aquatic Center, finishing 37th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:48.58.
The redshirt sophomore swimmer performed well amid the bright spotlight of the national stage facing elite competition over three events this week. He previously landed tied for 22nd in the 100 fly with a time of 45.52 seconds to match his own Atlantic 10 record on Friday and 49th in the 50 free (:19.79) on Thursday.
The meet closed a tremendous debut campaign in Buff and Blue for Matic, who became the fifth man to represent the program at the national meet.Â
This season, the Belgrade, Serbia, native broke a record that had been held by Olympic legend Michael Phelps, won seven gold medals as part of GW's dominant showing at the A-10 Championship and set individual conference records in the 50 free (:19.56), 100 fly and 200 fly (1:45.17).
Matic's swim Saturday also finished a historic season for the GW program in which it swept both Atlantic 10 titles for the first time, rewrote its all-time top 10 lists boosted by a strong contingent of newcomers and sent a representative to the national meet for the first time in four years.
