Buff & Blue swimmer tied for 22nd in his top event
ATLANTA - George Washington's Djurdje Matic matched his own Atlantic 10 record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 45.52 seconds on Friday morning at McAuley Aquatic Center to tie for 22nd at the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championship.
With a tremendous closing kick, the redshirt sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, tied for third in his heat and bettered his seed position by six spots in a field of 42 world-class competitors.
Matic earned his place at the NCAA meet with a personal-best swim in his top event at Georgia's Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet last month, and he was able to duplicate that performance under the spotlight of the national stage on Friday.
It's the best NCAA finish for any A-10 swimmer since GW's Gustav Hokfelt placed 18th in the 100 back at the 2018 meet.
Matic's record time in the 100 fly is 1.39 seconds faster than the conference mark entering the season, which was held by former Buff and Blue All-American Andrea Bolognesi.
Matic's sizzling Friday swim followed a solid opening performance on Thursday in the 50 free. He will be back in action on Saturday, competing in the 200 fly on the final day of the national meet.
