Matic, Osina & Rickert aim to improve times for NCAA qualification
A trio of GW swimmers will be in action this weekend at Georgia's Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet, aiming to improve their season-best times for NCAA qualification.
Fresh off helping the Buff and Blue sweep the team titles at the Atlantic 10 Championships, Durde Matic, Marek Osina and Marlee Rickert are set to swim their top events at Gabrielsen Natatorium in a meet that consists of prelims and finals on both Saturday and Sunday.
Osina and Rickert will focus on the backstroke events, while Matic tries to improve his conference record time in the 100 fly.
Osina was named Most Outstanding Performer at the A-10 Championships after landing seven gold medals over the four days. The senior's win in the 200 IM (1:44.72) broke his own conference record, and he also won the 200 back (1:42.22) and 400 IM (3:46.40) in career-best times. He posted a career-best 100 back showing (:46.76) with a sizzling leadoff leg in GW's 400 medley relay triumph. All four of those swims are well inside the NCAA B-cut standard.
In his first trip to the A-10 meet, Matic also collected seven golds last week, setting conference records in the 50 free (:19.56) and 200 fly (1:45.17) and a meet record in the 100 fly (:45.79). His career-best time of 45.72 in the 100 fly, set in December at Princeton's Big Al Invitational, remains ranked among the top 30 swims nationally.
Rickert earned five medals to help the women earn a team title, highlighted by a silver medal in the 100 back in a program-record time of 53.58 seconds, good for an NCAA B-cut. She also set career bests in the 200 back (1:58.15) and 50 free (:23.20).
The NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships will be held March 16-19 at McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, while the men's national meet runs from March 23-26 in the same pool.
