Michael Ludowig puts together three hit afternoon
EDINBURG, Texas- George Washington baseball's offense broke through for the first time this season, but the team was unable to overcome four errors on Saturday, and ultimately fell to UTRGV in the second game of the young season, 7-1.
After mustering just one hit last night against the Vaqueros' pitching, the Colonials came out swinging on Saturday afternoon and it paid off early. GW took a lead in the second inning after grad student Michael Ludowig doubled to right center, and then came around to score on a sac fly by Derek Ripp. Unfortunately, the lead didn't last longer than a half inning. UTRGV designated hitter Cameron Blake reached on a single, and was able to advance to second after an error. GW's first mistake proved costly, as Blake would eventually score on a ground out two batters later.
The errors would rear their head again in the third, when Vaqueros' leadoff hitter Brett Cain reached on another miscue. Cain would score two batters later on a single up the middle, giving UTRGV a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished. In total, GW made four errors Saturday, including one in each of the first four innings.
Despite the loss, GW's offense put together nine hits against the Vaqueros. Ludowig was 3-4 with a run scored, while five other Colonials picked up their first hits of the season.
Looking to avoid the sweep, the Buff & Blue will take the field against UTRGV for the final time tomorrow afternoon at noon. Justin Solt will make his first start of the year for GW.
