Colonials and Rams renew acquaintances on Saturday at 6 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball is back at the Smith Center for a pair of crucial home games, beginning on Saturday night vs. Rhode Island. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
UPDATED ATTENDANCE POLICY: For indoor events at the Charles E. Smith Center, in compliance with GW's updated visitor requirements, all guests age 5 and over will need to show their proof of vaccination by one of the following methods:
* the CLEAR Health Pass app on a mobile device
* a physical Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) vaccination card
* a digital copy of the CDC vaccination card
All guests must also be properly masked, and GW staff will be enforcing this policy for all events at the Charles E. Smith Center. There is no guest policy for fans younger than five years old.
BOUNCE BACK EFFORT: After allowing a season-high 62.3% shooting at Dayton Saturday, the Colonials responded with their best defensive performance of the year at Duquesne on Wednesday holding the Dukes to 52 points and 27.6% shooting, both opponent season-lows. GW held Duquesne to 9-of-40 (22.5%) in the first half and limited the Dukes to a 1-of-21 (4.8%) showing from beyond the arc.
GW's 21-point victory was the largest in an A-10 game since a 71-47 triumph at Fordham on Dec. 30, 2020. The 27.6% opponent field goal percentage matched the lowest since that same game.
HELLO AGAIN: GW has five games remaining in the regular season, four of which they have already played and beaten (Rhode Island, George Mason, Duquesne and Fordham). Under Coach Christian, GW has swept one repeat opponent, split the series twice and been swept four times. Prior to this year, GW was 1-6 in the first meeting of home-and-homes and 3-4 in the back end. This year, though, GW went 4-1 the first time through and is 0-1 in the second matchup (Dayton).
SPURTABILITY: Joe Bamisile led the Colonials with 21 points on Wednesday at Duquesne, his eighth 20-point game of the season in which GW is 5-3. Bamisile scored 11 points in the first half and 10 points in the second, his 13th and 14th double-digit halves of the season. James Bishop leads the Buff & Blue with 21 double-digit halves, including two 15-point periods and three halves with at least 20 points. Bishop has scored at least 10 points in the second half in 11 of GW's 24 games while Bamisile has done so seven times.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: Rhode Island's season has taken a drastic turn over the last month, beginning with the 63-61 setback to GW. The Rams, who won three of their first four A-10 games and were a top 100 team in the NET and KenPom, lost six straight starting with the loss to GW and have dropped seven of eight to sit at 4-8 in league play.
URI still possesses a stingy defense, ranking third in conference play by allowing just 0.956 points per possession. The Rams have struggled on the offensive end, ranking 12th with 0.939 points per possession. The Mitchell brothers continue to headline the roster with Makhel averaging a team-high 11.0 ppg and 5.6 rpg with Makhi adding 9.7 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Jeremy Sheppard averages 10.6 ppg as the lone other Ram providing more than nine points per game.
