James Bishop IV notches second 40-point game of the season
CHICAGO - Powered by an incredibly efficient offensive day and another highlight-reel showing from James Bishop IV, GW men's basketball opened up Atlantic 10 play with a 97-87 victory at Loyola Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
GW made 10 straight shots early in the first half, setting the tone for a clinic on that end of the floor, shooting 64% (32-of-50) from the field on the day. The Buff & Blue also connected on 10-of-17 3-pointers and 23-of-25 from the charity stripe, ultimately finishing with an eye-popping 1.47 points per possession.
The Colonials scored 90 points in a regulation game for the first time since Feb. 21, 2018 vs. Richmond (103-77), also the last time GW shot better than 60% from the floor.
Bishop was the star, putting up his second 40-point performance of the season. The senior guard is one of two players in the nation to post multiple games with at least 40 points this year.
Bishop did so on 12-of-18 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. He also drilled 11-of-12 at the free throw line and poured in 29 of his 40 after halftime. He also handed out a team-high seven assists.
But it wasn't Bishop alone on Saturday as Brendan Adams was 7-of-9 from the floor for 19 points in addition to handing out five helpers. Ricky Lindo Jr. connected on a pair of critical 3-pointers in the waning minutes, finishing with 13 points and six boards.
Noel Brown (9 points, 5 rebounds) and Hunter Dean (7 points, 7 boards), combined to make all five of their shots in 40 total minutes. Maximus Edwards added seven points and grabbed five caroms, helping GW to a 30-24 edge on the glass.
GW fell behind by seven in the opening minutes, turning the ball over four times before the first media timeout. The Colonials, though, hit 10 straight shots over the ensuing six minutes to turn an 11-4 deficit into a 26-21 advantage. After pushing the lead to as many as eight, Loyola scored five straight to go into intermission down just three, 40-37.
The Colonials then burst out of the locker room, scoring 12 of the first 15 points to grab their largest lead, 52-40, with 16 minutes remaining. Loyola worked the deficit down to four on a pair of occasions, but GW had an answer every time. Adams and Lindo teamed up for consecutive triples to push the lead back to 10 with four minutes left and Loyola did not get within seven the rest of the way.
With a league road win already under its belt, GW will look to continue the good vibes on Wednesday night when it travels to reigning A-10 tournament champion Richmond. Tip is set for 7 p.m. from the Robins Center.
