Bishop goes for 30, Edwards records first career double-double
WASHINGTON - Looking to get back in the win column and secure some momentum heading into finals on campus and an ensuing trip to Hawaii, GW men's basketball welcomed in Coppin State on Tuesday night. An early back-and-forth battle turned into a GW runaway late, as the Buff and Blue eventually cruised to an 83-71 home win.
George Washington turned a slim two-point halftime lead into a more-comfortable 14-point cushion at the 12:56 mark of the second half, and though the lead yo-yo'ed between five and 12 the rest of the way, it never was less than a two-possession lead and ultimately GW cruised to the dozen-point win.
The potent backcourt tandem of James Bishop IV and Brendan Adams gave their squad more buckets in bunches as they've been wont to do all season, with the duo combining for 48 points on Tuesday to burnish their standing as the A-10's highest scoring teammates. Bishop went off for a 30-piece on 10-of-20 shooting while nailing five 3-pointers. Adams, meanwhile hit a trio of threes of his own and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe.
In the most well-rounded game of his fresh and burgeoning collegiate career, Maximus Edwards not only joined his teammates in double digits with 16, but led all players with 12 rebounds (a new career high) and five assists in his first career double-double.
Coppin's Sam Sessoms, who transferred in from Penn State, entered play averaging 23.8 points and 5.9 assists per game - good enough for 4th and 13th in the NCAA - was slow to start and hard to stop late. Despite only taking four shots in the first half, Sessoms got it going in the second and dropped 17 after halftime on 7-of-10 shooting in the final 20. His effort just came too-little, too-late in his eventual 23-point, two-assist outing.
The Buff and Blue now take their talents to the Aloha State, where three games in four days over the holiday break awaits, all of which can be seen on the ESPN family of networks. First up for GW is another chance to take down a Power 5 foe, when the squad takes on Washington State on Thursday, December 22 at 9 p.m. ET in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
