Colonial senior scores most points by a GW player in A-10 history
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - GW senior James Bishop nearly single-handedly toppled one of the top teams in the CAA on Monday night, but a late 9-0 run from the homestanding Hofstra Pride gave them an 85-80 win over the Buff & Blue.
Bishop blew past his career high with 44 points on 15-of-24 shooting, including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc, adding an additional 9-of-10 from the free throw line. His outburst was the first 40-point game for a Colonial since SirValiant Brown had 42 against Siena in 1999.
The 44 points are also the most for a GW player since the Colonials joined the A-10 over 40 years ago, the most by any A-10 player since 2018 and the most of anyone in the country so far this season. He finished five points shy of Joe Holup's all-time school record of 49 points set in 1956.
Bishop scored 26 of his 44 points after intermission, aiding a phenomenal GW comeback effort after going into the locker room trailing, 48-37. The Buff & Blue opened the second stanza on a 17-5 blitz, taking the lead for the first time on a Bishop 3-pointer with 13:06 remaining.
GW's switch to a zone defense flummoxed the Pride to aid the run, but Hofstra eventually found a formula by hitting six 3-pointers over the next six minutes to assume a 68-64 lead with 7:48 remaining.
Bishop and company countered and pushed back ahead, 71-70, on a 3-pointer from the Baltimore native with 5:30 left. Hofstra, though, took the lead back on the next possession and never relented the lead again to earn the five-point win.
GW's offense, which came into Monday leading the A-10 in field goal percentage, shot 54.7% from the floor and knocked down 11 3-pointers. Monday's 80-point showing marked three-straight games reaching the threshold for the first time since 2018.
Brendan Adams reached double figures for the third time in as many games with 15 points and Hunter Dean remained perfect from the floor on the season, hitting all four shots and a pair of free throws for a 10-point effort.
Hofstra had a star of its own in Aaron Estrada, who scored 33 points, 23 before halftime. Tyler Thomas added 17 for the Pride, who shot 50.8% from the floor and connected on 14 3-pointers.
GW will now turn its attention to a season-long, four-game homestand, which kicks off on Friday night against Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
