Colonials look for first 2-0 start since 2016-17
WASHINGTON - Fresh off a 27-point trouncing of the opposition in its season opener, GW men's basketball welcomes crosstown foe Howard to the Smith Center on Friday. Tip-off on Veterans Day is at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ in the annual Military Appreciation Game presented by game sponsor, Metro.
AIMING FOR 2-0
GW won its season opener for the second-straight year and is now looking for its first 2-0 start since 2016-17. The 2016-17 season was also the last time GW posted an overall winning record (20-15) and the last time the Colonials appeared in the postseason, advancing to the second round of the CBI. GW opened 2016-17 by winning its first three games over Maryland Eastern Shore, Siena and Arkansas Pine Bluff.
PROLIFIC SCORING FROM JBIV
Senior James Bishop IV's 21 points on Monday marked his 22nd career 20-point game at GW in 48 appearances. Bishop has reached double figures in 41 of 48 career games with GW and has now scored 848 points in the Buff & Blue (17.7 ppg). The Baltimore native is 58th on GW's all-time scoring list, but can move up to 55th with 12 points on Friday and needs 22 points to pass Maceo Jack (2017-21) for 54th.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
With 12 points on Monday, Maximus Edwards became the first Colonial first-year to reach double digits in his career debut since Jameer Nelson Jr.'s 15 points in 2019. Edwards was also the first GW rookie to start on Opening NIght since Nelson Jr. in 2019.
Edwards followed in the footsteps of his fellow major conference transfers in having first-game success with GW. All five reached double figures in their first game with the Buff & Blue: Brendan Adams (22 in '21), James Bishop IV (20 in '20), Ricky Lindo Jr. (13 in '21) and Amir Harris (11 in '19).
A LOOK AT THE BISON
Howard is in the midst of a busy opening stretch, playing its third game in five nights on Friday evening. The Bison opened the season with a 95-63 loss at #4 Kentucky on Monday, but bounced back with an 87-74 win over UDC on Wednesday.
Howard is coming off its first winning season in more than two decades, going 16-13 a year ago in head coach Kenneth Blakeney's third season. HU was picked to finish third in the MEAC and is led by a pair of preseason All-Conference selections in Elijah Hawkins and Steve Settle.
HISTORY VS. HOWARD
The Colonials and Bison meet for the 12th time in program history with all but one of the meetings taking place at GW. The Buff & Blue are 11-1 against their D.C. neighbors, having won eight in a row dating back to 1997.
This will be the fifth time in seven years that Howard has made the trip to Foggy Bottom. GW has won those five matchups by an average of 11.5 points per game.
