GW picks up three MAWPC wins in its home pool
WASHINGTON - GW water polo continued on its historic run, going 3-0 this weekend and extending its program-best win streak to 13 games. The Colonials have not lost since the first game of the season against #11 Princeton.
GW, playing in the Charles E. Smith Center pool for the first time this season, defeated three MAWPC rivals: Bucknell (11-8) and Wagner (15-10) on Saturday, and Navy (14-12) on Sunday morning.
Goalkeeper Luca Castorina continues to be a stronghold for the Buff and Blue. Castorina made 38 saves in the three-game stretch, posting a .559 save percentage. Theodoros Pateros led GW with nine goals and has a team-leading 63 goals this season.Â

It took GW a bit to settle in against Bucknell. The Bison jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, and held a 4-3 lead midway through the second quarter. After a timeout called by Head Coach Barry King, GW would quickly gain control and never give it back. Pateros was a problem for the Bison on Saturday afternoon. He scored four times and drew five ejections, forcing the Bison to pay him much of their attention. GW held a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter, and were able to pull away for the 11-8 victory.Â
GW 15, Wagner 10
GW claimed its 12th win in a row on Saturday evening against Wagner, and did so in dominant fashion. Pateros and Sekulic led the way for GW, combining for nine goals. The Buff and Blue jumped out to a 5-2 first-quarter lead and expanded it even further going into halftime, up 10-5. GW played the entire second half with a comfortable lead, a big part in thanks to Castorina's 14 saves.Â
The Midshipmen did what no one has done all season - make Pateros look human. Navy kept Pateros scoreless, which was the first time he has been limited to less than three goals all season. GW, however, got the job done by spreading the wealth. Seven different players found the back of the net for GW, including graduate student Mateus Stellet, who tied his season-high with four goals. It took some time for GW to feel out the Midshipmen, but once it did there was no turning back. GW led by two at the half and was propelled by a pair of four-goal quarters in the second half to down Navy, 14-12, for its 13th straight win.Â
