Buff & Blue make short trip to face Hoyas
With less than a month to go until the Atlantic 10 Championships, GW swimming and diving returns to competition on Saturday with a local dual meet at Georgetown.
Diving begins at 9:30 a.m. at McCarthy Pool, before the swimming starts at 1 p.m. (Note: The meet will be held without fans in attendance.)
A quartet of first-year swimmers - Bode Ringenbach, Julia Knox, Molly Smyers and Philip Moldovanu - raced at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Greensboro, Fla.
The highlight was Ringenbach's 10th-place finish in the 400 IM in an NCAA B-cut time of 3:51.27 that was a personal best and ranks third in program history. The Raleigh, N.C., native was tabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week for the second time in recognition of his performance.
Knox qualified for finals in the 200 breast in 2:17.82 before finishing 23rd. The first-year from Craigavon, North Ireland, was named A-10 Performer of the Week.
That same week, the rest of the Buff and Blue took part in what turned out to be a record-breaking time trial at Navy.
Durde Matic continued his excellent fall, posting a time of 46.14 seconds in the 100 fly to take down a Lejeune Hall record that had been held by Michael Phelps. It was just off his A-10 record pace (:45.72) at the Princeton Invitational earlier in the month that ranks 16th nationally this season.
Leading a banner day for the Buff and Blue divers, Dara Reyblat set a new program mark on platform with a score of 213.83 en route to winning her first conference Rookie of the Week award.
RECORD FALL: Heading toward the postseason, GW will aim to carry over momentum from its strong start to the season.
In addition to his individual mark in the 100 fly, Matic was also part of record swims in the 200 medley relay (1:26.91) and 400 medley relay (3:09.40) with Karol Mlynarczyk, Marek Osina and Tyler Kawakami at the midseason meet.
On the women's side, the divers broke a pair of program records with Reyblat and Jamie Doak (1-meter, 279.23) doing the honors.
The women made 14 new additions to the program's all-time top 10 swimming list in 10 different events during the fall, while the men added 11 new top times spanning seven events.
The program has totaled seven A-10 Performer of the Week and six Rookie Performer of the Week awards so far, including a pair of weekly sweeps of all four awards.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS: Georgetown returns to action this weekend for the first time since Boston University's Terrier Invitational in late November. The men finished second out of five teams, led by Big East Athlete of the Week Drew Carbone, while the women tied for fourth out of six squads.
GW scored a resounding Senior Day sweep over the Hoyas at Smith Center Pool in the last meeting between these programs on Jan. 18, 2020.
UP NEXT: GW's final tune-up for the A-10 Championship comes at Virginia's Cavalier Invitational on Feb. 4-6. The conference meet runs Feb. 16-19 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Diving begins at 9:30 a.m. at McCarthy Pool, before the swimming starts at 1 p.m. (Note: The meet will be held without fans in attendance.)
LAST TIME OUT: GW had a break from competition for winter training following a successful fall that wrapped with a pair of meets in mid-December."The work has been great. Since we've been back on campus, it does feel like it's truly been a total team effort."@GWCoachBThom provides an update on our winter training and previews tomorrow's meet at Georgetown.#RaiseHigh pic.twitter.com/pGTZYbz77Q
