Goalkeeper honored after doubleheader at Harvard
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington goalkeeper Luca Castorina was named Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday in recognition of his excellence in net during last Saturday's doubleheader at Harvard.
Castorina totaled 21 saves in two games vs. Northeast Water Polo Conference foes at Blodgett Pool. The sophomore from Catania, Sicily, was in top form in a 12-11 overtime win vs. Brown, posting 15 stops, including several big-time blocks in OT while allowing just one score over the six minutes. He also tallied two steals and an assist in the thrilling victory to close the twin bill.
Castorina, who shared the award with Wagner keeper Ethan Zihr, was honored by the MAWPC for the second time in his young career. It's the second consecutive week the Buff and Blue landed a conference award after Andras Levai picked up Player of the Week recognition last Tuesday.
For the season, Castorina has 103 saves vs. 113 goals allowed across eight games, good for a .477 save percentage. He has also tallied 13 steals and six assists.
GW is set to open MAWPC play this week with three games in as many days. The Buff and Blue will visit Johns Hopkins on Friday night before hosting Mount St. Mary's at Smith Center Pool on Saturday afternoon and finally traveling to Bucknell on Sunday.
