
Volleyball Falls in Opening Match of Mountaineer Invitational

Buff and Blue to play a pair of matches on Friday
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – GW volleyball stole a set vs. an undefeated West Virginia program in the opening match of its final non-conference tournament but fell to the Mountaineers in four sets, 18-25, 18-25, 26-24, 8-25.
West Virginia began to pull away in set one at the halfway mark after an opening set that went point-for-point in its early stages. Eight Mountaineer kills would help the home team put set one away.
In set two, GW took advantage of four West Virginia errors to take the 4-2 lead. Despite seven more errors by the home team, the Mountaineers took the lead at 7-6 and never looked back. In the closing stages of set two, five kills by the home team forced GW into a comeback situation down 0-2.
Set three saw five lead changes and 12 ties. GW's offense registered a match-high 11 kills in set three, led by Salem Yohannes and Liv Womble with four apiece. A West Virginia error and a kill from Womble gave GW the 26-24 set three victory.
The Mountaineers' offense tallied 11 of their 53 kills in the final set and capitalized on nine GW errors. Yohannes added a pair of her team-leading 13 kills in set four.
UP NEXT: GW looks ahead to a pair of matches on Friday vs. UMBC at 1:30 p.m., followed by Robert Morris at 4:30 p.m.
