Softball pair honored by CoSIDA after A-10 title run
WASHINGTON - After helping GW softball on a historic run to an Atlantic 10 title and NCAA berth, Jenna Cone and Faith Weber have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 First Team, the organization announced Thursday.
Honored based on their combination of academic success and on-field accomplishments in Buff and Blue, the pair advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
A 2020 Academic All-American, Cone received Academic All-District honors for the second straight season, while Weber earned the recognition for the first time.
After having their season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cone and Weber opted to return as graduate students and proceeded to close out their careers in style on the Buff and Blue's memorable push to reach the national tournament for the first time.
One of the most prolific sluggers in NCAA history, Cone was named A-10 Player of the Year for the second time and an NFCA Second Team All-American, while Weber secured All-Conference and All-Region honors thanks to a breakout campaign. Both were named to the A-10 All-Academic Team, as well.
This spring, Cone was the leader of GW's nationally-ranked offense, posting a .415/.523/.880 slash line with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs across 48 games. The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., became the first repeat A-10 Player of the Year in more than two decades and then secured a place on the All A-10 Championship Team while helping Buff and Blue claim their first outright conference tournament crown.
Cone finished her decorated career with A-10 record totals for home runs (73) and RBIs (254) that rank among top 25 all-time in NCAA history. Along the way, she continued to shine academically, earning her undergraduate degree in Communication in May 2020 before posting a 3.80 GPA in the Media & Strategic Communication graduate program during the 2020-21 academic year.
Weber was a force at the plate and in the circle in her fifth season in Buff and Blue, setting career bests in every major pitching and hitting category.
The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., compiled a 14-1 record with a 2.22 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings while hitting .345 with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs. She won 14 straight decisions following a season-opening setback, with an 11-0 mark in A-10 play, and ranked fifth in the conference in long balls and slugging percentage (.691).
Weber secured undergraduate degree in Public Health in May 2020 with a 3.84 GPA before posting a perfect 4.0 mark this school year while pursuing a master's in Epidemiology through the School of Public Health during the 2020-21 academic year. In recognition of her all-around excellence, she received the GW Athletics Red Auerbach Award.
Following another round of voting considering representatives from all eight districts, CoSIDA will announce its Academic All-America honorees later this month.
