GW swimmer in action in 100 back on Friday
A native of Omaha, Neb., Ryan Patterson of GW swimming and diving is set to test himself vs. the nation's best in his hometown at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The junior swimmer will hit the water at the CHI Health Center on Friday for the 100-meter backstroke. With a seed time of 56.30 seconds, he's ranked 29th out of 60 competitors heading into the long-course event.
"Having GW represented at the U.S. Olympic Trials is another benchmark for our program," Head Coach Brian Thomas said. "I'm proud of Ryan for achieving this goal individually - especially being hosted in his hometown - but I'm also excited to see who follows in his footsteps as we head toward 2024.
"The U.S. Olympic Trials is an environment like no other - 14,000 fans with each final session broadcast live in primetime. It's great exposure for GW."
Patterson clinched a spot at the Olympic qualifying meet back in November at the Toyota U.S. Open with a strong performance in the 100 LCM back. He then helped the Buff and Blue clinch their third Atlantic 10 title in four years by qualifying for A finals in all three of his events at the conference championship in April, posting personal-best efforts in the 100 back (:48.65), 200 back (1:47.02) and 50 free (:20.59).
At U.S. Olympic Trials, preliminary racing begins at 11 a.m. ET on Friday to set the 16-swimmer field for evening finals, beginning at 8 p.m. Prelims will be streamed through USASwimming.org with the Olympic Channel televising the finals.
The top two finishers in each event during this Wave I meet advance to next week's Wave II meet with the chance to earn a spot on the U.S. roster for the Tokyo Games, which open July 23.
