George Washington men's basketball has inked local product Qwanzi Samuels to add to its 2021-22 roster. The 6-foot-8 forward out of District Heights, Md., played scholastically at St. John's where he helped his team win the WCAC Championship as a sophomore. Samuels was a 4.0 student in high school.
"Qwanzi adds another piece to our puzzle with his length and athleticism," said Head Coach Jamion Christian. "He comes from our local pipeline where we believe the best high school basketball in the country is played. We're thrilled to be able to welcome this young man and his high character into our program, and we're excited to get him into our gym to coach him to become the best player and person he can be. Watching him grow through the years, I feel that he will achieve his best basketball here at GW. The combination of skills that he possesses will allow us to play him with multiple lineups and gives us great flexibility."
Samuels was an All-WCAC Honorable Mention selection as a high school junior before suffering an injury prior to his senior year. He later prepped at Loomis Chaffee in Connecticut where he earned All-NEPSAC honors in 2018-19. Returning from injury, he went on to appear in 28 games for Florida Gulf Coast, including 25 games with four starts as a true freshman in 2019-20. He has three years of collegiate eligibility remaining.
"We are sticking to our strategy of keeping talent here at home, or being the most attractive option for them returning home," continued Christian. "Our local high school teams are some of the best in the country. We have some of the best high school coaches anywhere in the DMV. We have some of the best AAU programs and skilled trainers here. We have great trust in our local players as we continue to improve our standing in the A-10."
