Colonials improve to 11-5 in A-10 play after doubleheader sweep
After dropping the series opener, the Colonials (22-13, 11-5) responded with 29 runs in three games to dominate the Patriots (10-25, 3-13). With two weekends remaining in A-10 play, GW remains just two games behind first-place VCU in the conference's South Division.
GW 5, George Mason 0 (7) - Edwards was the star of the show in tossing his second complete game of the year and his second career shutout. The righthander allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out five while needing only 92 pitches to earn his fifth win of the season.
GW's offense provided enough support, getting on the board via a double play in the second. In the fourth, Cade Fergus doubled the lead with an RBI single before scoring along with Anthony Frechette on a Noah Levin two-run single to make it 4-0.
Levin added an insurance tally with an RBI single in the sixth as part of a 3-for-4 day with three RBI. Logan Leax and Eddie Micheletti Jr., also notched two-hit days in the opener.
GW 13, George Mason 7 - The Buff & Blue nearly returned the run-rule defeat from yesterday back on Mason in the nightcap, opening up a 10-run cushion in the seventh inning before settling for the six-run triumph.
GW got things going in the third inning with four straight hits as part of a four-run frame. Fergus started the scoring with an RBI single before Steve DiTomaso tripled home two more. A Patriot error brought home the fourth run of the frame.
An inning later, Domenic Boselli lashed a two-run double to right center while Steve Barmakian made it 7-1 with a sac fly.
Connor Harris, meanwhile, dominated Mason on the mound, finishing six innings for the first time in his career. The sophomore allowed only one run while scattering nine hits, striking out three for his second win of the year.
GW plated two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to grow the lead. Tyler Hix had a two-run, pinch-hit single in the sixth while Levin finished out his big day with a sac fly in the eighth.
The Colonials now turn their attention to the final home series of the season with Richmond coming to Tucker Field at Barcroft Park starting on Friday for a four-game series.
