Colonials come back to win back end, 11-8
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW baseball scored four times in their last at-bat on Saturday afternoon to salvage a doubleheader split at George Mason. The Patriots took the opener by run-rule, 11-1, before the Colonials pulled out an 11-8 win in seven innings.
With the split, the Buff & Blue are now 9-5 in A-10 play with two more games against the Patriots (3-11) on the docket tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
George Mason 11, GW 1 (7) - The Colonials fell by the run rule for the first time this year after the Patriots scored seven runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings.
GW was held to one hit and scored its lone run as a result of an error and a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
GW 11, George Mason 8 (7) - GW went right to work in the back end with the first four Colonials reaching base culminating in a Domenic Boselli two-run double.
Mason came back to take a 4-2 lead through two innings, but GW retook the advantage in the third with three runs. Derek Ripp tied the game with a two-run single before Anthony Frechette lifted a sac fly to make it 5-4.
An inning later, Noah Levin smashed a two-run dinger to make it 7-4 halfway through. Mason came back to take the lead with four runs in the next three innings to reassume an 8-7 lead going to the seventh.
That's when GW got the offense in gear again, tying the game on another Patriot error. With two down, Steve DiTomaso broke the deadlock with an RBI single before Levin and Boselli followed with a pair of RBI knocks.
Trevor Kuncl retired the side in order in the bottom half, earning the win by pitching the final three innings without allowing an earned run.
