Boselli, Frechette go yard for Colonials
DAYTON, Ohio - For just the second time in conference play, GW dropped the first game of a weekend series, falling 6-4 to Dayton on Thursday afternoon. The only other time the Buff & Blue fell in the opener, they responded by winning three straight over VCU.
GW (26-15, 14-7) led 4-1 at the halfway mark, but saw the host Flyers (19-25, 9-4) score the final five runs of the game, ultimately taking the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh.
The Buff & Blue got on the board first in the top of the third inning via a Noah Levin RBI single, scoring Cade Fergus. After Dayton tied the game at one in the fourth, Anthony Frechette led off the fifth by tagging his second career long ball to make it 2-1. Domenic Boselli followed four batters later with a two-run tater to make it 4-1.
Dayton got a run back in the bottom of the fifth against GW starter Rich Pfluger, who didn't factor in the decision after allowing two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts.
The Flyers got to the GW bullpen in the seventh inning plating three runs on consecutive singles to first tie the game before taking the lead. UD added an insurance run for good measure in the eighth.
The Buff & Blue weren't able to muster the comeback, as Boselli's dinger with two down in the fifth was their last hit of the game.
The Colonials now have three chances to win two games and qualify for next week's A-10 tournament. The deed could be completed on Friday when the two teams square off in a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. at Day Air Ballpark, home of the minor league Dayton Dragons.
