Harris twirls gem, Ripp provides game-winning knock
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball received an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore Connor Harris and got enough offense to eke out a 3-1 win over Richmond on Senior Day at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Harris was the star on the mound, pitching into the eighth inning for the first time in his budding career. The sophomore set down the first eight he faced before allowing his only run on a bases loaded hit by pitch in the third.
He rebounded to allow just three baserunners over his last four-plus innings, utilizing a heads up play from Steve Barmakian in the top of the fifth to cut down a Spider (17-15, 3-9) runner at the plate.
That play seemingly turned the momentum as the Colonials (25-14, 14-6) didn't get their first baserunner until a two-out walk in the bottom of the frame when Tyler Hix walked. Derek Ripp followed with a single to left and Eddie Micheletti capped the rally with an RBI single to right-center, tying the game at one.
In the seventh, buoyed by a boisterous crowd that included members of the A-10 Champion softball program, GW got another clutch hit from Ripp, who perfectly placed a blooper inside the left-field line to score Domenic Boselli to make it 2-1.
Harris came back out for the eighth and allowed a leadoff single before giving way to Justin Solt, who coaxed a double play and a groundout to eliminate the threat. Harris pitched 7.0-plus innings, yielding just the run on four hits with a strikeout and two walks for his third win of the year.
The Colonials tacked on insurance in the eighth via a leadoff walk to Anthony Frechette, who came around two batters later on a Steve DiTomaso RBI single.
Solt came back out and fired a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his second save in as many days and clinch the series victory for GW.
The Buff & Blue will now close the home season on Tuesday, welcoming Georgetown for a 3 p.m. first pitch before heading to Dayton for a massive four-game series to end the regular season.
