Colonials swipe first game to assure winning conference record
The Colonials (24-14, 13-6) hung on for a 7-5 win in the opener, sprinting out to a 7-1 lead through five innings before the Spiders (17-14, 3-8) made things interesting late. Richmond starter Colby Wyatt then tossed a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win for UR in the backend.
GW 7, Richmond 5 (7 innings)
In the second, Cade Fergus doubled in a run before Steve DiTomaso followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0. The top three members of the GW lineup - Fergus, DiTomaso and Levin - went a combined 7-for-11 with three runs scored and three RBI.
However, it was the middle of the order that provided some needed insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Barmakian laced an RBI triple to the left-center gap before scoring on a suicide squeeze from Logan Leax. Three batters later, Leax scampered home on an infield single from Anthony Frechette.
On the mound, Harrison Cohen tip-toed through traffic on the basepaths, but ultimately allowed just two runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out six, to earn his fifth win of the year.
Richmond scored three times in the seventh inning and had the tying runs on base, but Justin Solt entered out of the pen to get the final out and earn his first save of the season.
Richmond 5, GW 0 (7 innings)
The second game belonged to Wyatt and the Spiders, who limited the league's best hitting team in batting average to just a pair of doubles in the complete game shutout.
GW's best chance came in the fourth inning when it loaded the bases via a double and two walks, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Jaret Edwards pitched his third complete game of the year in the loss and deserved a better fate. He allowed five runs (three earned) in seven innings while striking out three. He fell victim to a four-run second that was aided by a pair of GW miscues and allowed a solo homer leading off the sixth.
The Colonials will look to finish off the series victory on Senior Day at the Tuck on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon with the senior day ceremonies beginning at 11:30 a.m. and airing live on ESPN+.
