Colonials win three of four from preseason favorite Rams
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball won its third-straight one-run affair on Sunday afternoon to clinch a series victory over the A-10 preseason favorite VCU at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The 5-4 triumph cemented the Buff & Blue's first series win over the Rams since 2013.
Similar to Saturday's second game, GW found itself behind 2-0 after two innings after the Rams pushed across single runs in each frame. The damage could have been worse, though, as VCU left two on in each inning and ultimately stranded nine in the game.
GW cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded fielder's choice from Steve DiTomaso, yet left the tying run aboard.
In the fourth, Steve Barmakian tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line, moved to third on a passed ball and stole home while unsuspecting VCU hurler Andrew Ward was left flummoxed on the mound.
The Colonials added on in the fifth thanks to a two-out error extending the inning for Domenic Boselli, who blasted his second homer of the year to left to make it 5-2. Boselli led the day with a 3-for-4 day at the dish, scoring a pair in addition to driving in two.
VCU made things interesting when a GW fielding error scored two runs in the sixth, but Trevor Kuncl struck out Liam Hibbits to leave two aboard.
That would be the last threat of the day for the Rams as Kuncl retired the final 11 batters he faced in order, needing just 44 pitches to go the final 3.2 innings for his third save of the year.
That made a winner of Christopher Kahler, who allowed only an unearned run on three hits in 3.2 innings for his first collegiate victory.
Winners of three straight, GW will now step out of conference for its next three games beginning on Wednesday at Coppin State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
