Colonials down VCU with pair of one-run victories
Leading off in a 2-2 game, Micheletti turned on a 1-2 pitch and clocked it well beyond the right field fence for his second career homer and GW's first walk-off of the season.
Aside from the fireworks to end the twin-bill, the story was GW's pitching staff, which held the league's top offense in VCU to just six runs on 13 hits over the 14 innings.
Game 1: GW 5, VCU 4 (7 innings)
Cohen ultimately finished off the game, winning a 13-pitch battle with Steven Carpenter with a strikeout. The redshirt sophomore's first career complete game came in just his ninth start, as he struck out eight in the seven innings for his third win of the season.
Offensively, GW got on the board with a Noah Levin RBI double in the home half of the first. VCU tied the game with a solo dinger in the second, but the Colonials came right back with three runs in the bottom half. Cade Fergus drove in the first two with a two-out, two-run double before scoring on a single from Steve DiTomaso.
The Buff & Blue added insurance in the fourth via a sac fly from Levin, who capped off a 2-for-2 effort with two RBI. Fergus and Anthony Frechette contributed multi-hit affairs as well.
Game 2: GW 3, VCU 2 (7 innings)
VCU jumped on Jaret Edwards quickly with two runs in the first inning, but the veteran hurler settled in and lasted 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and three walks while authoring four strikeouts. He retired seven of the last eight he faced with the lone man reaching on an error.
GW took advantage of three straight walks to open the last of the sixth, tying the game via a Dom Boselli sacrifice fly and Steve Barmakian RBI single.
Trevor Kuncl kept the momentum in the GW dugout with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, setting the stage for Micheletti's heroics.
The Colonials will look to win the series from the Rams on Sunday with first pitch set for noon in the nine-inning finale.
