St. Mary's Md. - The George Washington sailing team competed in its first regattas at St. Mary's over the weekend.Â
"First off, on behalf of the whole sailing team I want to thank the entire GW Athletics Department for helping get the team on the water this past weekend at SMC," head coach Billy Martin said. "More than ever this was a complete team effort from our off-the-water team in Foggy Bottom. I know that if it wasn't for the massive efforts from many GW Athletics employees, this weekend would not have happened," Martin said.
On Saturday, GW competed in an 18-boat fleet. Matt Logue/Allison Forsyth and Soenke Jordan/Ruby Gordon took first in a seven race series. Genevieve Mumma made her collegiate debut and finished with an impressive 9th place showing alongside Michael Ehnot.
In Sunday's team event, GW's 3-2 and 2-3 record earned the two teams No. 3 and No. 4 overall earning wins over both of its opponents, Boston College and St. Mary's.
"Overall I'm happy with how the team performed and know that we have the talent and skill needed to beat anyone this year," said Martin. "Everyone else is going to keep getting better and is dealing with the same challenges. We just need to keep pushing ourselves as a whole to clean up our races."
GW is scheduled to be back on the water when it travels to Navy on March 20.
