Buff and Blue fell to La Salle in MAWPC semifinal
LEWISBURG, Pa. - GW men's water polo closed its abbreviated season on Sunday, falling to La Salle, 6-4, in a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Championship semifinal at Kinney Natatorium.
Looking to advance to the conference final for a fifth straight season, the second-seeded Buff and Blue fell into an early hole and couldn't catch the third-seeded Explorers, who later in the day fell to host Bucknell with the title and an NCAA Championship berth on the line.
Down 3-0 within the game's first five minutes, GW stayed close thanks to goals from Henry Maas, Ford Bruggen, DJ Davis and Nick Schroeder but couldn't complete the comeback.
Luca Castorina closed out a promising rookie season in net with eight saves. He compiled 66 total stops and a .589 save percentage over five games in his debut campaign.
GW's pair of seniors led the way during an unprecedented campaign: Andras Levai, a 2019 ACWPC All-American, posted an assist on Sunday and finished with a team-high 13 points via seven goals and six assists, while Gabriele Simonti notched a team-high four steals in the finale, showcasing the defensive excellence that's been his calling card over two seasons in Buff and Blue.
