Colonials part of three-team field at Bucknell
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - GW men's water polo has earned the No. 2 seed for the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship as part of a trimmed-down field, the conference has announced.
The Buff and Blue will face third-seeded La Salle at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium on Sunday at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to play the host Bison later that day in a 3:30 p.m. final.
The MAWPC champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will be hosted at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center in Los Angeles from March 18-21.
Originally scheduled to crown its champion with a two-day, eight-team championship hosted by Navy, the MAWPC has revised its plan in response to COVID-19 related challenges and will hold a one-day, three-team event at Bucknell. Selections for the reduced field were made by the conference from the eligible pool of competitors based on records, head-to-head competition, wins against higher-seeded teams and strength of schedule.
Following an abbreviated regular season, GW (1-3) hopes to secure a pair of wins to earn its third MAWPC Championship in four seasons and return to the national tournament. The Buff and Blue played both Bucknell and La Salle last weekend at Navy, dropping an 8-7 decision to the Bison on Saturday before dispatching the Explorers, 9-8, the next day.
