Colonials look to continue seven-game winning streak
Riding a seven-game winning streak, GW softball hosts Saint Louis for a four-game set on the Mount Vernon Campus this weekend.
The Colonials and Billikens open the Atlantic 10 series with a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at noon, before playing two more on Sunday with a noon first pitch.
Saturday's action is set to be streamed via ESPN3.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW opened conference play last weekend with a resounding four-game sweep at Revolutionary Rival George Mason.
The Buff and Blue outscored the Patriots 38-3 in the series with a pair of run-rule victories.
Sierra Lange was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week after compiling a 3-0 mark with a 0.88 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 16 innings. The redshirt junior hurler allowed one run or fewer in each outing, combining on a pair of shutouts with teammate Faith Weber.
Lange also shined at the plate, posting a .667/.706/1.333 slash line with 10 hits, eight RBIs and four runs scored.
GW closed the series in style with Jenna Cone turning in a historic offensive performance in the weekend finale.Â
The decorated graduate student became the first student-athlete in program history to hit three home runs in a game and also broke single-game marks for RBIs (seven) and total bases (13). Along the way, she also broke the program's all-time records for hits (238) and runs scored (165).
NATIONAL ATTENTION:Â After dropping its first four games of the season, GW has won 12 of its past 14 contests, putting up some impressive all-around statistics along the way.
Offensively, the Colonials rank among the top 20 nationally in scoring (7.22 runs per game, 14th) and batting average (.337, 16th).Â
GW's pitching staff is ranked 39th in the country, and first in the A-10, with a 2.05 ERA, and its defense is 15th in fielding percentage, at .980, with just nine errors in 18 games.
Thanks to that recent success, GW was slotted No. 12 in the initial NCAA RPI rankings, released earlier this week.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS:Â Seven different GW hitters have at least two home runs this season, paced by Jenna Cone's six long balls.
In turn, the Buff and Blue rank 25th in the nation and tops in the A-10 at 1.33 homers per game. They have combined for 24 round-trippers through 18 games after hitting 18 in 24 contests during last spring's abbreviated slate.
Lange hit her first two of the season last weekend, while Alessandra Ponce (four), Weber (four), Jessica Linquist (three), Alexa Williams (three) and Hannah Eslick (two) have also gone deep multiple times in the early going.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS:Â Saint Louis enters its A-10 opener at 5-13 overall after taking five straight losses.
Gabbie Kowalik leads the Billikens offensively with a .419 batting average, plus eight extra-base hits and 13 RBIs in 11 games. Aubrey Hacke (3.31 ERA in 61 1/3 innings) owns four of the club's five victories in the circle.
GW and SLU are slated to meet again on April 24-25 in St. Louis.
