Depth of team lifts GW to first place finish
St. Mary's, Md - The GW sailing team competed in a one-day regatta on Saturday at St. Mary's earning first-place overall after finishing first, third and sixth in its fleet races.
"SMC, who we matched up against a couple of weekends ago, made some nice adjustments since, but the Colonials worked hard this spring break and proved to be difficult to out-train and outwork," Head Coach Billy Martin said.
Despite challenging conditions with a north breeze and 5-8 knots, Michael Ehnot and Sydney Register showed fast and clever sailing to finish second overall. The second place finish paired with Matt Priebe and Megan Mansfield proved to be the winning combination to GW's first-place showing.
Sarah Hardee with Sylvia Fresco and Mikaela Smith made significant improvements from the first event and Annabelle O'Bryan made her first collegiate start.
"Overall I'm happy with how the team performed," said Martin. "Every competition is valuable and not guaranteed so I'm happy to get some good reps this weekend. It's validating to know that we've been pushing hard enough at practice and focusing on the right skill sets."
GW will compete at Old Dominion on Saturday, March 27.
