Colonials rack up 26 runs on 28 hits but fall shot in twin-bill
The Buff & Blue's offense combined for 26 runs on 28 hits in the double dip with multiple standout performances. Derek Ripp homered in both ends of the doubleheader, combining for four hits with three runs and seven RBI. Noah Levin also went yard in the nightcap, collecting seven hits in total and driving in seven runs.
Steve Barmakian also had three hits in each game, scoring five total runs. Logan Leax, starting both games in right field, scored five runs in the second game, totaling four hits and two RBI. Anthony Frechette also had four hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
Game 1: Saint Joseph's 13, GW 12
The teams exchanged three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, leaving GW ahead 12-10 heading to the final third. Jaret Edwards came on in the top of the sixth to settle things down for GW, retiring eight of nine hitters he faced entering the ninth.
However, St. Joe's put two on with two out against Keagan McGinnis in the ninth and took the lead on a three-run line drive homer from Brandon Drapeau.
GW put the tying run on base in the home half, but Levin flew out to cap off the opener.
Game 2: Saint Joseph's 16, GW 14
St. Joe's didn't get its first hit against Justin Solt until the fourth inning, but evened things, 7-7, with six runs in the top of the fifth.
GW re-took the lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and pushed the advantage to 12-8 through seven innings after scoring three times in the seventh.
Once again, though, the Hawks never died and scored two in the eighth to cut into the lead. Holding the same 12-10 deficit entering the ninth, SJU took the lead on a two-run double and added an important cushion with a three-run homer, to go up 16-12.
Ripp capped off his tremendous individual day with a two-run single in the bottom half to make it a two-run game, but a strikeout with the tying run at the plate ended the doubleheader with a salty taste in the Colonials' mouths.
GW will be back in action on Wednesday, continuing its homestand with a mid-week matchup against VMI at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
