Fergus clocks first homer of the season
ARLINGTON, VA. - GW baseball saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Saint Joseph's to open up a three-game non-conference series.
Cade Fergus provided the only run of the day for GW with a towering solo homer in the last of the third, his first of the season and fifth of his career.
Aside from the blast, GW's offense was held in check by a trio of St. Joe's pitchers, mustering just four hits. Steve Barmakian collected a pair including a double in the sixth that was the Colonials' final knock of the game.
Harrison Cohen (0-1) authored a quality start on the hill, yielding two runs on three hits in six innings with seven strikeouts. He was dealt the tough-luck loss after allowing a solo homer in the fourth and a run on an error in the fifth.
St. Joe's tacked on two insurance tallies in the eighth inning to create the cushion. Hayden Seig struck out six in four innings to start before giving way to Mike Falco (1-0), who tossed a pair of scoreless frames in relief. Ian McCole earned his first save with four strikeouts in three hitless innings.
The two teams wrap up the series with a pair of nine-inning games on Sunday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
