Colonials and Spiders tip at 8 p.m. on Thursday
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball battles No. 6 seed Richmond in the second round of the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday night. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ESPN+ from the Siegel Center in Richmond.
DEFINING THEIR ROLES: GW got tremendous contributions in Wednesday's victory from Mayowa Taiwo and Gabby Nikitinaite, two players who have chiseled out a specific role during the 5-1 stretch. Taiwo has started the last six games after returning from an ankle injury and is averaging 8.0 ppg and 5.7 rpg. GW is 6-1 when she starts against A-10 foes this season.
Nikitinaite has turned into the first option off the bench, posting double figures in three of the last four games while averaging 14.3 ppg. She has hit 12-of-24 (50.0%) from beyond the arc and seen her season average grow from 4.8 to 7.1 ppg.
TRIPLING DOWN: After struggling for the majority of the season, GW has found its 3-point touch since its 11-day pause last month, averaging 5.8 made 3s per game and hitting at a 39.8% clip. The nine triples against George Mason on Feb. 28 tied a season-high.
In the first 16 games, GW shot just 20% from beyond the arc, and averaged 2.9 made trifectas per contest. The Buff & Blue's previous season-high was five made 3s at St. Joe's and 36.4% shooting at Fordham. GW has hit five or more long balls in four of the five wins since then and shot 38.5% or better five times.
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS: Richmond grabbed the No. 6 seed and will be making its debut in the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday. The Spiders are led by All-Conference performer Kate Klimkiewicz, who paces the team with 14.0 ppg and is tops in the league with 63 made 3-pointers. Rookie of the Year Addie Budnik provides 11.8 ppg and a conference-leading 3.0 blocks per contest, ranking ninth-best in the nation. Klimkiewicz averaged 12 ppg and 9.0 rpg in two matchups vs. the Buff & Blue, while Budnik contributed 12.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
