Colonials storm back from 14 down, come up just short
RICHMOND, Va. - A valiant comeback attempt from GW women's basketball forced its A-10 Second Round matchup with No. 6 seed Richmond into overtime, but the Colonials fell just short, 58-54, to end their season.
GW trailed by 14, 48-34, with 3:04 left in the third quarter, but put on the defensive clamps to get back in the game. The Colonials held Richmond without a point for the next 10 minutes, closing to within 48-45 on an 11-0 run.
After a Spider bucket, GW scored the final five points of regulation, evening things up on a layup from Mayowa Taiwo with 1:40 left. Neither team scored the rest of the way, forcing the Buff & Blue into their first overtime game in over three years.
In the extra session, GW took the lead twice, the last of which at 54-52 on an Ali Brigham layup with 50 seconds remaining. Richmond converted a 3-point play on the next possession and forced consecutive turnovers, ultimately finishing the game on a 6-0 run to get away with the win.
Taiwo was dominant for the second straight game in the A-10 Championship, establishing a new career high with 19 points and adding 11 rebounds for her third career double-double.
Graduate student Jasmine Whitney posted another phenomenal all-around effort with 13 points, six steals, four rebounds and two assists. Gabby Nikitinaite added in eight points and six rebounds.
After allowing 40 points and 52% shooting in the first half, the Colonials limited the Spiders to 18 points and 17% shooting in the second half and overtime. GW also forced 23 UR turnovers leading to 19 points to aid the comeback effort.
