Colonials return nearly entire roster from truncated 2020 season
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Â GW baseball was projected to finish eighth in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, it was announced on Thursday.
The Colonials return 24 letterwinners from last year's team, including all nine starting position players and the entire weekend rotation. GW was 8-8 last year prior to the remainder of the season being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Head coach Gregg Ritchie returns for his ninth season at his alma mater, a year after surpassing the 200-win mark in his career. He is second on the program's all-time win list entering 2021 with 203.
This season will feature numerous changes in the A-10 format. The conference has been separated into geographic pods with GW placed in the "South" pod with Davidson, Dayton, George Mason, Richmond, Saint Louis and VCU.
The Colonials will play four-game weekend series against each of their six division opponents with a single game to open and close each series sandwiched around a doubleheader of two seven-inning games.
Of GW's six conference opponents, five were projected to be among the top six teams in the league. VCU was chosen as a narrow preseason favorite with four first-place votes, followed by Fordham and Dayton, who each also received four first-place votes. Davidson was chosen fourth, followed by Saint Louis, Richmond, Rhode Island and GW. Saint Joseph's, George Mason, La Salle, St. Bonaventure and Massachusetts round out the poll.Â
The top team from each pod along with the next two best teams overall (regardless of pod) will qualify for the four-team Atlantic 10 championship to be played at the highest seed from May 27-29.
GW's full schedule is expected to be released soon.
