Buff & Blue to face Monarchs on Friday & Saturday
GW swimming and diving is set for its first road competition of the new season, visiting Old Dominion for a two-day meet on Friday and Saturday.
The action at J.C. Scrap Chandler Pool starts at 3 p.m. on Friday and resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW got a useful measuring stick for its early-season progress last Saturday when it welcomed one of the nation's top programs in Virginia Tech to Foggy Bottom.
The Buff and Blue highlights included an excellent diving performance from Jamie Doak with a career-high 1-meter score of 269.25 to qualify for the NCAA Zone Championships and a slew of shining Buff and Blue debuts from the newcomers.
STARTING FAST:Â After sweeping A-10 Most Outstanding Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer honors last spring, Karol Mlynarczyk got his sophomore season off to a flying start vs. Virginia Tech. The Warsaw, Poland, native posted a time of 1:49.92 in the 200 back that ranks 10th nationally in the early going this season, while his time of 49.36 seconds in the 100 back puts him 14th among D-I student-athletes so far.
Marek Osina put together a strong swim in the 200 IM, posting a time of 1:51.46 that ranks 11th nationally to date. The senior set an A-10 record in the event with a time of 1:45.18 en route to gold last spring.
MAKING A SPLASH:Â Newcomers Molly Smyers, Julia Knox, Moriah Freitas, Carly Perri, Durde Matic and Connor Rodgers all paced the Buff and Blue in at least one event in the opener.
Three rookies posted team-best times for the women. Knox was runner-up in the 200 free (1:55.03) and third in the 200 IM (2:07.70), Freitas landed second in the 100 fly (:57.64) and Smyers placed third in the 1,000 free (10:33.11). A graduate transfer from Duke, Perri led the way in the 200 fly in 2:07.98.
On the men's side, Matic paced the Buff and Blue in the 50 free (:21.09) and 100 fly (:49.13), while Rodgers was first on the squad in the 200 free (1:43.14) and 200 fly (1:55.70).
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS:Â This is ODU's season opener. The Monarch women placed sixth at the Conference USA Championships last season, while the men finished fourth at the CCSA Championships.
UP NEXT:Â GW has a break from competition for the next three weekends before traveling to Pittsburgh for a dual meet on Nov. 6.
