Yohannes registers 16 kills, nine digs
RICHMOND, Va. – GW volleyball continued its five-game road stretch on Sunday, falling at VCU in straight sets, 20-25, 20-25, 15-25.
Salem Yohannes led the offense for the second-straight match and set a career-high .351 hitting percentage after tallying 16 kills on 37 attempts. The effort marks the sixth time this season that the Woodbridge, Va. native has surpassed the double-figure mark offensively.
Yohannes' offense started early, helping GW create a 12-1 advantage to open up the first set. Yohannes was responsible for four kills and Lauren LaBeck registered back-to-back service aces before the home team began to generate their own offense. Eight kills from the Rams helped cut into the GW lead, with VCU eventually creating separation at 19-15. The home team tallied six more kills in the closing stages of set one to take the 1-0 advantage.
Yohannes continued to play strong offensively in set two, quickly putting down three balls to give GW the 4-3 lead. VCU went on a 4-0 scoring run to regain control of the set and didn't look back. Yohannes tallied three more kills and Liv Womble added in a pair.
Three separate scoring runs helped the home team close the match in set three. GW put together a four-point rally to cut the Rams' lead to two, but VCU went on to outscore GW 11-2 in the final stages of the set to put the match away.
UP NEXT: GW will visit Fordham on Friday for a 5 p.m. start before heading to Kingston, R.I. on Saturday for a 7 p.m. first serve vs. Rhode Island.
