James Bishop vs. Duquesne
Nail-biter Finally Goes GW's Way in Thriller vs. Duquesne, 75-73
1/3/2021 5:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Last month, the GW men's basketball team endured a string of four consecutive losses, each of which came after the Buff and Blue were within a possession of the opponent with less than a minute to go. In consecutive home games before GW snapped its mini slide, the squad fell in back-to-back home games by a single point, both times with a chance to take the lead in the game's final possession.
On Sunday at the Smith Center in a back-to-back with Duquesne, fresh off a battle yesterday in which GW hung tough but couldn't muster the win, on the strength of sophomores Jamison Battle and James Bishop's scoring, and grad student Matt Moyer's swiss army knife of a game, there was a breakthrough. Battle's career-high 29 points set the stage for Bishop and Moyer to close out the contest. Down one with less than 15 seconds to play, Bishop launched a 3-pointer from the far side of the court across from his bench that found nothing but net, and after Moyer put the clamps down on defense on the Dukes' final possession, GW secured its third win of the season, second victory in three A-10 games, and first win of the season by less than five points after coming up on the wrong side of tight contests so many times previously.
Battle looked like every bit of an All-Conference performer in his 29-point, 7-rebound effort. He ecliped his previous high of 25, equaled his career-best tally with six 3-pointers, and swiped two steals on the other end for good measure. Moyer, meanwhile, was a monster. The 6-foot-9 swingman bottled up Duquesne's point guard at the top of the defense and crashed the boards with abandon in a monster 14-point, 15-rebound effort. The double-double was Moyer's fourth of the season and second in two days against the Dukes.
As for Bishop, who entered play as the A-10's second-leading scorer after netting 20+ points in eight of nine previous games this season, he fell short of 20 in this one but hit unquestionably the biggest bucket of his burgeoning career. Bishop took the inbounds pass from Tyler Brelsford, stepped behind a Chase Paar screen and buried the go-ahead trey. The conference's second-leading assist man as well, he also registered a team-high seven helpers.
GW will look to let the good times continue to roll when it hosts UMass on Wednesday. Tip-time from the Smith Center is 6 p.m. live on NBC Sports Washington.
