Men’s Basketball Rally Comes Up Just Short vs. VCU, 84-77
1/13/2021 6:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
In matinee action on Wednesday afternoon in DC, VCU men's basketball came to GW in a battle that would give one side a leg up on the other in the A-10 standings. The squads brought matching 2-1 conference records into the game, along with two of the league's top scorers in GW's James Bishop and VCU's Bones Hyland.
While Bishop earned the upper hand on the stat sheet with a career-high 24 points, it was Hyland who left with the win in a hard-fought game that saw 40 personal fouls and 51 combined free throws between the combatants. There were also 43 combined turnovers in the slugfest, as GW hadn't played in 10 days and the Rams brought their patented pressure and feistiness.
The game will best be remembered by the debut of Ricky Lindo Jr. for GW, a DC-product and Maryland transfer, who had sat out until this point this season. Thrust into the starting line-up in the absence of Jamison Battle due to injury, Lindo made an immediate impact. Before fouling out, Lindo registered 13 points and team-highs of 12 rebounds and five steals.
Absent Battle, the A-10's fourth-leading scorer, GW looked for offense elsewhere and Lindo proved up to the task, but the Rams' D never makes things easy. Chase Paar got inside for nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and first-year Tyler Brelsford and Siena-transfer Sloan Seymour opened things up from outside as both hit a pair of 3-pointers in three attempts. Bishop and Matt Moyer (12 points) did most of their work at the free throw line as the duo combined to shoot 17-of-19 at the charity stripe.
GW found itself in a 17-point hole nearing the midway point of the second half but scrapped to the finish. Trailing by seven with less than a minute to play, Bishop had a good look at a 3-pointer that would've brought the deficit down to four, but it just missed and VCU responded with two free throws on the other end to extend back to a nine-point margin.
Hyland finished with 17 points to lead four Rams in double figures.
Up next for GW is a "home" game at EagleBank Arena on the campus of George Mason on Sunday. The Dayton Flyers come to the region for a 4:30 p.m. tip on NBC Sports Network.
